In-house training for legal professionals
We are delighted to present a selection of our partners:
The B&K College for Bär & Karrer AG in-house programme has been running since 2010. It aims to equip young business lawyers with specific legal knowledge, teach them key concepts in business and economics, and improve their soft skills. The law firm hopes that this broad-based training programme for all associates will improve the quality of its services to clients even further. The legal training modules are taught by the firm's own instructors, while professors and external specialists from the University of St. Gallen handle the classes on business, economics and soft skills. The programme is designed to be a certificate and diploma programme. Graduates receive a CAS in Law and Management from the University of St. Gallen after two years in the programme, and a DAS after four years. Programme credits can be applied toward an Executive MBA HSG if students wish to acquire even more expertise in business management.
The In-house Executive Programme "Summer School in Management" for Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP was established back in 2007. Freshfields was the first law firm to specifically include business training in its internal professional development efforts. The pilot programme was met with overwhelmingly positive response from associates, and today around 25 principal associates a year complete the eight-day intensive training course on corporate management in Switzerland. The summer school is designed to improve understanding of business concepts and management fundamentals. In 2009, the law firm came in first in JUVE's "Azur 100 - Top Employers for Lawyers 2009" ranking. The jury specifically named the Summer School in Management as a highlight of the firm's career development policies. The training programme, which is taught together with the University of St. Gallen, is now being expanded and integrated with the law firm's comprehensive Career Milestones Programme. The new concept includes the awarding of credits that can be applied to other educational programmes, including an Executive MBA HSG degree from the University of St. Gallen.
HM Akademie St.Gallen, the in-house programme in law and management for Hengeler Mueller, won the "Azur award 2010" for the best associate training programme among all German law firms. HM Akademie was designed by the Executive School of the University of St. Gallen in cooperation with Hengeler Mueller. All the firm's associates complete a thorough professional development diploma programme in law, business management and personal development. Some classes are taught at the university's executive education campus in St. Gallen. Graduates have the option of continuing their education to earn an Executive MBA HSG.
Isler & Pedrazzini Ltd is one of Switzerland's main law firms for intellectual property law. In 2013, its in-house executive education programme focused on communication and presentation skills. The resulting workshop, with its input presentations, case studies and training sequences, focused on scenarios encountered in day-to-day client counselling and offered many helpful hints for dealing with clients, opposing parties, courts and administrative agencies.
The Federal Patent Court generally conducts settlement hearings between disputing parties. Different approaches to conducting hearings were presented and discussed at the court's annual executive education conference. The judges had an opportunity to practice the various approaches in a specific case during a class.
